Exterior painting of window trim

I was wondering,

I'm hiring a painter to paint my house and I'm not sure, when painting exterior window trim, whether to have only the front windows done or all them?

Hi,

It would depend on what kind of shape the paint (or stain) that's on your windows (or doors) is in.

If you have peeling, chipped, faded or discolored paint, no matter where it is on your house, it should be scraped, sanded, spot primed then painted with two coats of quality paint or exterior stain.

A coating that has mold or mildew would also need cleaning with some type of fungicide.

With that said, if your using the same coating color, and your trim still has a good coating on it, then one coat of paint or stain just to freshen it up should do the trick.

A more damaged coating such as where there is raw wood could require two or more applications of primer, paint or stain though.

Sticking painted windows

by Kathleen

I googled "how to paint windows without sticking" and found your website. I really enjoyed reading through it! I wasn't able to find what I was looking for, so I'm hoping you could help me.

We recently removed and painted some old wood windows, let them dry for several days and then reinstalled them. Now the humidity has moved in and the freshly painted windows are sticking.

Is there anything you could suggest we do to eliminate this problem? I thought wax, but we don't want to have to remove them again.

What do you think? I would appreciate any ideas you have to offer.

Thank you for your time.

Using Exterior oil stains on interior millwork?

by Kevin
(Saskatchewan, Canada)

I like a lot of the colors available for exterior semi-transparent oil stains. Can I use exterior wood stains successfully to stain interior millwork? If so would I be able to apply any type of varnish as a final coating?
