Leveling my walls to paint them

by Annamarie
(California)

I removed old kitchen wallpaper with a steamer but the walls still have some unevenness to them.

The walls are now kind of shiny and do not have a true flat even wall finish.

Before painting what should I do about the texture as I tend to like the look of a flat wall surface and leveling the walls seems like too big of a job for me to undertake.

What are your suggestions? thanks.

Hi Annamarie,

Leveling a surface (skim-coating) can definitely tend to be a very dusty labor intensive process.

Unfortunately skim-coating is the only alternative (that I know of) for getting ones walls smooth and flush.

You could hire a dry-waller (sheet rock pro) to do the work for you or use this texture page and find a texture technique to cover up any of the walls imperfections.

No matter what you choose to do be sure to apply a primer prior to painting.

Shawn.
