Matching my roof color to the siding

by Colleen

I'm having new fiber cement siding put on my house.

I need to choose the paint color. My roof is a very light gray color.

I was considering a very dark grey paint with white trim. Would this look bad considering the light gray roof?

Hi Colleen,

For the best results take a small piece of your roofing to the paint store.

At the store match your roofing to one of the stores paint samples. Once matched you can then use grays from the same color family as the roofing.

When using colors of the same family try and keep them a shade or two apart. Doing so will cause your color scheme to flow together better.

I'm not sure that I would use the exact same color as your roof as it might be a little to much of the same color. A darker color gray (from the roofing color family) would be good though.

Your paint store also has exterior color pamphlets to help you choose colors that will complement the colors that you choose.

Choosing a paint color for my front door

by Deborah Piercey
(st. johns, nl)

Hi,

I am planning to paint my front entrance door, and really don't know what colour to go with...

I live in a duplex and the siding is buttercup yellow, the shingles are a reddish colour and the veranda is a stained cedar colour....

Hi Deborah,

Light yellow is one of those colours that goes with almost all the primary colours along with black.

Dark red is of course the traditional colour to pair with a light yellow. For something a little more unique though cobalt blue or deep purple would definitely be interesting.

Your local home improvement centers and paint stores have interior or exterior colour pamphlets if you prefer. They tend to show an assortment of colour sample combinations for you to choose from.

Start by finding your specific buttercup yellow (or a tone, hue, shade from the same colour family) in one of the pamphlets.

Once you find a match (or close to it) then you can select one of the suggested complementary colours for your front door.

Choosing exterior trim & shutter colors

by Diane
(TX)

I am siding our house with vinyl siding, the color is spruce.

I am wondering on what colors for trim and shutters.

The house was built in the 30's and is cottage style. I would like it to look classy or rich.

Hi Diane,

I added your question to this exterior color selection section.

Try taking a piece of your siding to the paint store and following the suggestions given to others on this page.

By doing so, you should hopefully be able to find the color selection help that your looking for.

Exterior trim color for a yellow house

by Bob
(Rensselaer, NY.)

What trim and shutter colors go with a yellow exterior home.

Hi Bob,

White is the most popular color along with gray of course.

I would also suggest following the instructions that where given to others on this page for selecting exterior colors
